Since 1930, the Boy Scouts of America has helped younger boys through Cub Scouting. It is a year-round family program designed for boys who are in the first grade through fifth grade (or 7, 8, 9, and 10 years of age). Parents, leaders, and organizations work together to achieve the purposes of Cub Scouting. Currently, Cub Scouting is the largest of the BSA's three membership divisions (The others are Boy Scouting and Venturing). 2. What is the purpose of Scouting? The ten purposes of Cub Scouting are:
The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law.
3. Who runs the Scouting Program at Heritage Park? The Raleigh Jaycees have volunteered to run the Scouting Program for the boys at Heritage Park. The Raleigh Jaycee chapter is covering the cost for the yearly fees and pays the membership fees to the Boy Scout Council. There is no cost for the parents. 5. When during the year can my son join? He can join at any time during the calendar year. 6. How can I register my child? Contact the Cubmaster Ed Blackman (919) 271-2862 or come to one of the meetings. 7. When and where do the dens meet? We meet at 6pm on the second and fourth Wednesday of every month the Learning Center of Heritage Park during the school year. In the summer we meet at 6pm on the second Wednesday of the month. Please see the link to our Calendar. 8. How long does the meeting usually last? We *try* not to take longer than an hour per meeting. Yes, we provide the boys with a small snack and juice drink at the conclusion of the meeting. 10. How do I know what den is for my son? Cub Scouting members join the Cub Scout Pack for Troop 170 and are assigned to a den, usually a neighborhood group of three to eight boys. Tiger Cubs are for first-graders Wolf Cub Scouts are second graders Bear Cub Scouts are third graders Webelos Scouts are fourth and fifth graders 11. What is the difference between a Den and a Pack Meeting? The regular meetings within your own group or den are for boys of the same grade and you do activities and work on earning badges, pins or beads. Pack meetings are done throughout the year and bring all the dens together. 12. What is the purpose of a Pack Meeting? The Pack Meetings serve several purposes. The boys are recognized for their achievement and receive the badges, pins, etc that they have earned since the last Pack Meeting. They also perform skits, songs or other demonstrations of things they have learned. 13. As a guardian can I come to watch the den or pack meetings or join in? Yes! We welcome all participation by the adults in the Boy Scout’s life. You can come to both the Den Meetings and to the Pack Meetings. You can come to watch or to help the volunteers. The Boy Scout Council feels the more participation by the adults the better. Even if you can’t join in we’d like to encourage you to stop by and meet the den leaders. 14. Can a younger/older sibling come? Unfortunately no, since this is run by volunteers we only can take the registered boys at this time. 15. What about uniforms, patches and all that other stuff my youth will need? The Raleigh Jaycee chapter will pay for one shirt for each
boy that attends at least 3 meetings. Since these shirts are no cost to the
boys we feel that they must earn their shirt by showing interest. We also pay
for the badges and pins they will earn. If you would like to buy more of the
Boy Scout uniform such as the pants, neckerchief, etc. please visit the Scout
Store at the Service Center. 16. What if someone loses a shirt? The Jaycees can only purchase one shirt per Scout. Any replacements will need to be bought by a parent at the Scout Store referenced in the above question. If we have extra shirts we will give those out. 17. Are there any trips involved? Yes, we try to take the boys on several different outings throughout the year. Please check the calendar periodically for upcoming events. 18. What happens if one of the boys misbehaves? To foster a learning environment for all the boys, if one boy is misbehaving badly the den leader can ask them to go home and leave the meeting. After 3 instances of this the leader has the option to remove them from the Scouting Program. 19. Is there any connection between the Girls Scouts and the Boy Scouts of America? Actually, no, we are two completely separate and distinctly different organizations and always have been. 20. What happens when someone is in the 6th grade and is no longer eligible to be a Webelo? Contact the Cubmaster Ed Blackman (919) 271-2862 and we will try to set up your son with a neighboring Boy Scout troop for children in the 6th grade. | ||||||||||
